European Colour Director New
In 1972, at the age of 16, Peter saw a photograph of the 'Brush' cut by Christopher Brooker at Sassoon: "I saw that picture and I thought - I want to be able to do that". Halfway through a classic three-year apprenticeship he decided to specialise in colour. As Peter recalls, "I entered the colour department and I felt like I'd come home - I thought, this is it!"
And that feeling has never ebbed away. In 1979 he was invited to spend a year in Germany, and 27 years later he's still there. He has held the position of Colour Director since 1988 and in that capacity has developed many of the radical techniques that have made Sassoon a world leader. His job has a wide remit: he travels internationally as an inspiring educator and he controls the quality of colour education and its implementation within the Sassoon salons. For him, "there's a high creative element with the collections where we interpret the zeitgeist and aim to create what's right for now".
Peter is passionate about colour, particularly that found in the work of "the German Expressionist painter Franz Marc, who combined the angular crystalline shapes of Cubism with bright vibrant colours, and Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus who was a colour god".
As Peter puts it, "I still get really excited by colour combinations and how they can be transposed onto the head - how colour can accentuate the shape and balance of a haircut. At Sassoon it's about getting everything right - that's what sets us apart, it's not just serendipity."
